Assistant Professor-Mathematics

B DETAILS:  The Mathematics Department of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville invites applications for at least one full-time tenure track position at the assistant professor level beginning August 23, 2017.                        

QUALIFICATIONS:  A doctorate in mathematics or mathematics education must be completed with a transcript provided by January 1, 2018. Applicants must have a strong commitment to undergraduate education and present evidence of teaching experience at the college level which may be fulfilled by two-semesters of a half-time teaching assistantship in graduate school. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to or experience with diverse populations.  A willingness to collaborate with both students and faculty, and to become involved in university service, is essential.  It is expected that the candidate will remain professionally active in the mathematics community.  We are primarily interested in hiring outstanding teaching faculty who will be assets to the Department and the University.

 RESPONSIBILITIES:  The primary responsibility will be to teach undergraduate mathematics courses.  The typical teaching load is twelve credits per semester, with two or three preparations.  Faculty are expected to advise students and engage in scholarly and professional development activities that enhance teaching effectiveness and professional skills, and/or provide opportunities for students to engage in undergraduate research. In addition, faculty members, participate in university/community service and outreach activities.

COLLEGE/DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:  The College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (EMS) enrolls approximately 3,500 students in ABET-accredited BS degree programs in Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Mechanical and Software Engineering, and Engineering Physics and BS degrees in Mathematics, Broad Field Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems. The College of EMS also participates in a statewide Collaborative Engineering Program that allows place-bound undergraduate students to complete their BS degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with minimal travel. In addition, the College has an online Master of Engineering program, which has been designated as a "Best Buy" in online education.

The Mathematics Department in the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science, has 24 full-time tenure/tenure track positions, and regularly employs an additional 6-10 academic staff.  The department offers undergraduate degrees in mathematics, mathematics education, mathematics with an emphasis in actuarial science, and mathematics with an emphasis in finance.  The department also serves programs in engineering, science, technology, business, and education.  Class sizes are approximately 30 students.  

CAMPUS INFORMATION:  The University of Wisconsin-Platteville, founded in 1866, enrolls about 9,000 students in 42 baccalaureate and 6 master's programs. It possesses institutional strengths in middle level education, engineering, industrial technology, agriculture, criminal justice and business. The campus is located in Southwest Wisconsin's largest and most historic community.
