ARCHITECT INTERN – ENGINEERING

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:   As part of the City of Dubuque Engineering Department, the architect intern will work with the City’s Project Manager, GIS Coordinator, Fire Marshall and ADA Inspector to implement a GIS based American with Disabilities Act required Transition Plan. This position involves working with the City’s GIS system and facility management software to develop floor plans and a room numbering system for each building. After a building has been established in the software, a previously completed ADA Checklist for Readily Achievable Barrier Removal will be transposed into electronic format.

EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):

ESSENTIAL: Tasks include use of ESRI GIS software, use of facility management software, review and scanning of construction drawings, telephone and email coordination with city staff involved with the project, problem solving assistance with various project related issues, electronic filing of project documents, facility site visits to perform ADA inspection spot checks and measurements in order to create floor plans and responding to citizens questions and service requests in a courteous, timely and equitable manner.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

ESSENTIAL: Full time during the summer. Normal work hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Preferred educational background would include areas such as architecture, civil engineering, construction management, legal, and related courses. The ideal candidate will be able to function comfortably in a professional work environment, possess technical writing skills, be self-motivated, and be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Technical skills necessary for the position include MS Word, MS Excel. Knowledge of CADD or GIS software would be beneficial but not required. The successful candidates will have completed at least their freshman year in their field of study. The successful candidates will be knowledgeable of diversity, equity and inclusion, possess experience working with a diverse workforce and a demonstrated ability to follow a management style that is input oriented and values equity, problem solving and the development of partnerships and a desire to be part of an organization that values service, people, integrity, responsibility, innovation and teamwork.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: The internship is scheduled to begin mid-May and end in mid-August. Compensation will be $13.60 - $15.79 per hour depending on experience and capabilities. Candidates may have the opportunity to work part-time during school, full-time during winter break, and to return for subsequent summers. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and automobile insurance coverage consistent with the City’s requirements.
