Who We Are
Area Residential Care is a private, non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization, created in 1968 by a group of parents and other interested parties. Its mission is to empower people with intellectual disabilities to achieve their highest quality of life. From its inception, Area Residential Care’s purpose has been to provide community-based services for persons with intellectual disabilities. The organization has grown over the past 40 years to serve an average of 250-275 people with disabilities annually; providing residential, vocational, and day services in Dubuque and Dyersville communities.
Through a variety of community-based residential and vocational programs, Area Residential Care helps people with disabilities become active, participating members of the community. Giving people with disabilities choices about where and how they live, work and socialize with their non-disabled peers is the essence of Area Residential Care’s purpose.

- Enrolled in their third or fourth year at a university or college working toward a BA in Social Work, Special Education, Psychology or related
- College level of reading, math, and writing skills
- Candidate needs to be a highly organized and detail-oriented person proficient with a variety of office equipment, computer, and computer database applications.
- Candidate will be working with sensitive information. Must be able to maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Candidate must be able to work independently and be multi-task oriented.
- Candidate must be available to complete required agency training upon hire
- Assigned a caseload of 1-2 consumers to study. Read and understand the Life Plans of assigned consumers and work with consumers toward reaching their goals.
- Consistently ensures that active treatment (programming) is regularly completed for each person served during all times of day to support individual growth
- Help with regular QA checks on individual programming
- Help generate activity calendars for individuals served based on individual goals
- Help plan, arrange resources, and assist with outings for individuals served
- Assist agency personnel with word processing, data entry, filing
- Maintain the security of consumers by keeping all sensitive information in locked filing cabinets. Maintain confidentiality in verbal and written communications
- Works at least 8 hours per week providing direct-care, either during day programs or in residential homes
- Completes overall cleaning and general care of the home, including care of floors, bathrooms, appliances according to cleaning lists.
- This position is highly visible to staff, consumers, guardians, and community members, either in person or by telephone, of Area Residential Care and therefore needs to display a professional and courteous image for the agency at all times.
This position involves occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 20 pounds, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. It also requires pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, and mobility. Must be able to physically prompt, escort, and physically restrain individuals served. Ability to walk unsupported and stand unsupported to assist individuals with disabilities
Equipment Used to Perform the Job:
Office telephone system, computer and associated software, fax machine, camera and photocopier. Adaptive equipment for individuals served (wheelchairs, communication devices, prosthetic equipment, mealtime equipment, etc.); miscellaneous cleaning equipment and supplies such as mops, brooms, and cleaning agents; all major household appliances such as stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer, other small household appliances; whirlpool.
