The University of Wisconsin-Platteville invites applications for a Student Success and Retention Specialist.  The specialist will research, design and implement proactive outreach to targeted student populations, monitor progress reports and academic alerts, and respond to students’ academic needs through coaching and referral to appropriate campus resources. The specialist will also work collaboratively with academic departments to design proactive interventions for students who do not meet established benchmarks, such as credits earned, declared major, or timely degree completion.

The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to provide vision and initiative within areas of responsibility and work effectively with students and staff.

Responsibilities

Proactive Intervention:

  • Work with the Academic Intervention Team to research, design and implement multiple outreach campaigns each semester. 
  • Monitor targeted student populations using EAB Navigate student success management system to identify groups that require intervention.
  • Research best practices for student success and proactive intervention and share with relevant campus partners.
  • Document and report on proactive outreach campaigns to demonstrate success rates and impact on student populations.
  • Assess the success of collaborative retention efforts by reviewing student data/reports, and analyzing information according to particular subgroups.

Early Alerts/Coaching:

  • Monitor Progress reports and academic alerts, assign cases and follow up on interventions.
  • Provide academic coaching to students to help them develop effective learning strategies and motivate them to identify and overcome obstacles that may be impeding academic success.

Assist with Academic Support Programs’ priorities, including supporting New Student Registration and Transfer Student Orientation.

Work closely with academic advisors and student success professionals in the Colleges and other Divisions to coordinate student support efforts across campus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited institution.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting with undergraduates in a student success related capacity.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience successfully working independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate students of diverse backgrounds, including sensitivity to their needs and concerns. The applicant should demonstrate a knowledge of and interest in diverse cultures and populations.
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. ​
  • Awareness of FERPA and ethical principles in working with students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, education, human services, or related field. 
  • Experience working in a higher education setting as a success coach, academic advisor, or related position.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess student populations in order to develop effective intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of EAB Navigate student success management system, or other student success systems.
