GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: As part of the City’s Engineering Department, the project management intern will assist in the coordination of capital improvement projects under the direct supervision of the Project Manager. This position involves working in all aspects of project management which includes scope, schedule, cost, risk assessment and quality.  Project assignments will vary in size and scope and include working on projects that are in either the design or construction phase. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through conferences and results achieved.  This position involves working on types of civil infrastructure projects including buildings, stormwater, sanitary and renewable energy.  Aspects of work includes project design, construction administration, construction observation and record keeping. A portion of the work also requires regular communication between the various design consultants, construction contractors and utility stakeholders.  Performs related work as required.


ESSENTIAL: Prepares requests for proposals; coordinates the consultant selection process; prepares and reviews construction bid documents and contracts; project design assistance, drafting project specifications, coordinates work with design consultants and contractors; assists in problem solving various project management issues; GIS data mapping, electronically files project documents, performs onsite construction observation, and assists the project manager with other non­project related assignments; responds to resident’s requests in a courteous, timely and equitable manner. 




ESSENTIAL: Preferred educational background includes civil engineering and related courses. The ideal candidate will possess solid technical skills, be self-motivated, be a good technical writer and communicator, and be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Technical skills desired for the position include understanding of construction materials, construction survey, plan reading, MS Word and MS Excel. Knowledge of CADD or GIS software would be beneficial but not required. Physical ability to handle medium to heavy work with some heavy lifting. The successful candidates will have completed at least their freshman year in their field of study. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: The internship is scheduled to begin mid­June and end in mid­August. Compensation will be $13.80 ­ $16.03 per hour depending on experience and capabilities. The work is full­time during the summer. Normal hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Overtime if necessary for assigned projects, work hours could be 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Candidates may have the opportunity to work part-time during fall and spring school semesters, full­time during winter break, and to return for subsequent summers.  Interested students are asked to submit a cover letter, resume and employment application.
