The City of Dubuque has operated under the Council/Manager form of government since 1920. Under this form, legislative responsibility rests with the City Council and administration authority is given to a professional City Manager.
The City Council is responsible for setting overall policies and goals for the City and is comprised of the Mayor and six members who are selected in a non-partisan election for four year terms. The Mayor is the chief elected official and formal representative of the City. The Mayor and two council members are elected atlarge and four council members are elected from one of four wards into which the City's thirty-one square miles are divided. Over twenty boards and commissions are appointed by the council to advise them on a wide range of city issues. The City Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of city government.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Dubuque Fire Department has an exciting internship opportunity for college-aged students. This internship program allows the intern the opportunity to learn what the firefighting/paramedic career field with the City of Dubuque is all about. The intern will gain knowledge in all aspects of firefighting/paramedicine and will have opportunities to train side-by-side with firefighters and observe first-hand real-life emergency calls. The intern will also spend time helping with staff projects.
QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent; and experience working with a diverse workforce and population.
ACCEPTABLE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Data retrieval/entry; ability to use a computer; research skills; ability to work alone; physical ability to participate in simulated firefighting activities; knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion; demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team; demonstrated ability to follow a management philosophy that is input orientated and values equity, problem solving and the development of partnerships; and a desire to be part of an organization that values service, people, integrity, responsibility, innovation and team work.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This is a limited term position with a duration of twelve weeks. The work week is approximately sixteen hours. Duties will include researching and collecting data, data entry, marketing and public education. Time will be spent learning the job of a firefighter/paramedic. The intern will spend time doing hands-on training on various topics such as firefighting, auto extrication and emergency medical services. The intern will also have the opportunity to ride along on calls to experience first-hand what being a firefighter/paramedic is all about.
