Academic Reading Tutor AmeriCorps Member

2019-2020 School Year

Contract Dates: September 9, 2019 – May 1, 2020 (varying  service hours available - 300, 450 or 675)

Salary: Living allowance of & Education award *

Closing Date: September 15, 2019

The Academic Reading AmeriCorps Member will serve alongside classroom teachers and instructional coaches to provide one-on-one and small-group reading interventions to K-3rd grade students in the Dubuque Community School District. 

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Examples of Duties:
1. Provide reading interventions directly to students individually or in small groups;
2. Collaborate with school staff in researching and planning appropriate reading interventions for specific students;
3. Prepare and implement positive, student-focused activities and interventions to engage students in their learning;
4. Monitor and record student performance and behavior during and immediately after reading sessions;
5. Develop a relationship with students, teachers and staff to foster a positive learning environment;
6. Provide a drug-free, educational, nurturing and safe supervised environment for youth attending Dubuque Community Schools;
7. Act as a role model exhibiting appropriate behavior including civic responsibility, community action, and relationship building;
8. Ensure children's physical, emotional and mental safety by completing program and agency-required trainings;
9. Immediately report harmful youth behavior to appropriate building and program officials;
10. Model constructive participation in all daily activities;
11. Maintain and uphold confidentiality practices and policies;
12. Attend all AmeriCorps Monthly trainings and service projects;
 

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Typical Qualifications:
1. Applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
2. Applicant must pass three-part Criminal History Background Check because of reoccurring access to vulnerable populations.
3. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident or U.S. National to serve with AmeriCorps Programs.
4. Must be competent in reading. No formal training necessary, relative experiences are valid. Must be a role model for students.
5. Applicant must have reliable transportation.
6. Applicant must be creative, energetic, dependable and a self-starter.
7. Desire to work with children; experience working with children a plus.
 

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

SERVICE SCHEDULE:
Service activities will take place predominately within an elementary school with the Dubuque Community School District. The AmeriCorps Member must be able to serve between the hours of 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday. Start times will vary based upon the school placement and when the academic reading block is scheduled during the school day for each grade level.

Members are required to attend the monthly training offered to all AmeriCorps Members within the AmeriCorps Partners in Program.

Members may be asked to serve at special events and activities within the grant partnership that may be outside of the member's normal service hours. The program may require the member to engage in other allowable activities that are not specifically outlined in the position description, but that support the AmeriCorps program design and which help the program meet its goals. In no circumstance will members be asked to perform prohibited activities outlined in the Member Service Agreement.

*AmeriCorps member will receive education award in the form of an electronic payment through myamericorpgs.gov. Education award may be used to pay educational costs at eligible post-secondary educational institutions or qualified student loans. Members who are 55+ years of age can transfer award to child or grandchild under specific conditions.
