Job Overview
GENERAL SUMMARY: The Line Service Technician is a customer service position supporting ground operations for inbound and outbound aircraft crews and passengers. Airport line technicians must interact with airport staff, security officers and patrons to make sure everything is safe and secure for departures and arrivals. In addition, they service aviation and commercial aircraft with fuel; de-ice aircraft, refill water, empty lavatories, or clean and polish exterior; and perform other duties as assigned. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The employee in this class is responsible for fueling, parking, washing and hangaring general aviation and commercial aircraft at the City's airport. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the FBO Supervisor or designee, and is reviewed through results achieved.
JOB DUTIES:
- Direct Aircraft:
- Guide, tow, park, greet and organize arriving and departing aircraft at the gate or ramp.
- Tow or move planes to flight areas, gates and/or hangars.
- Operate aircraft towing tugs/tractors.
- Maintenance and Fuel:
- Operate mobile fuel trucks to fuel general and commercial aircraft.
- Ensure fuel trucks are stocked and prepared to distribute fuel which includes performing quality control checks and reporting any visible damage to aircraft.
- Perform minor maintenance and checks on vehicles, fuel storage areas and equipment; and quality assurance checks on fuel trucks and tanks, and fuel deliveries.
- Record fuel inventory.
- Fixed Base Operation (FBO) Terminals:
- Assist with the upkeep of FBO terminals, hangars and airport grounds by making sure they are litter-free, clean, safe and organized.
- Perform FBO terminal cleaning duties.
- Maintain aircraft hangars so planes can be hangered or stored over night or for longer periods of time.
- During inclement weather, help maintain walkways and steps on all sides of the terminal and aircraft ramp; and de-ice aircraft.
- Report suspicious activity in terminals, including unattended baggage, to security.
- Monitor movements and maintain security on the general aviation ramp.
- Operate aviation ground support equipment.
- Customer Service:
- Assist with customer service needs.
- Handle luggage, provide transportation between gates or terminals, give patrons directions, interact with lobby attendants, converse with pilots and greet passengers who are entering or exiting terminals.
- Respond to questions and service requests.
- Assist with customer service needs.
- Rental Car Activities:
- Perform cleaning and refueling duties for cars owned by airport based rental car companies.
- Conduct fuel quality checks.
- Office and Miscellaneous Duties:
- Complete written and electronic reports documenting checks on fuel, fuel storage areas, fuel trucks and other line service activity equipment.
- Obtain and maintain training on de-icing, towing and fueling requirements for Airline, Charter and general aviation aircraft.
- Assist the Airport Operations Specialist or FBO Supervisor.
- Participate in the City’s Intercultural Competency Training Program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ramp Air Control - Knowledge of aviation hand signals in order to direct pilots.
- Transportation - Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air or road, including the relative costs and benefits.
- Computers and Electronics - Knowledge of processors, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications.
- Customer and Personal Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Public Safety and Security - Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions including accident and loss prevention practices.
- Clerical - Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology.
- Judgment and Decision Making - Thinking about the pros and cons of different options and picking the best one.
- Speaking and Active Listening – Communicating by talking to and listening to others, not interrupting, and asking good questions.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties require working with flammable, hazardous materials; working in a high noise environment; regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE); physical labor such as pulling, lifting, and climbing; and working outside in all types of weather including inclement conditions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Customer service experience.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Iowa Driver’s License.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with a diverse workforce and/or population.
- Education or experience working in the airline industry, military or related field.
OVERTIME STATUS: Non-exempt
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: Employee shall establish their principal place of residence within thirty (30) miles of their place of employment as soon as practicable after appointment, but within two years of appointment.
