Head Start Teacher Associate

Operation New View Community Action, Dubuque, IA

-  Become knowledgeable of and adhere to Head Start goals and performance standards and state child care licensing requirements to ensure that the classroom environment is healthy and free of all hazards;

 - Assist Teacher, Cook, Center Aide/Transportation Aide where appropriate, in all program operations;

 - Refer all needs of assigned families to the Teacher and appropriate supervisory staff;

 - Participate in center staff meetings;

 - Assist Teacher in establishing good home-center relations, by making home visits and other parent contacts that will assure the maximum carryover benefits of the Head Start experience to child’s family environment;

 - Help coordinate and assist with transition activities within the Head Start program and community/school programs;

 - Responsible for the continued evaluation of children’s growth and achievement on assessment guide;

 - Be sensitive to the special needs of children and incorporate responsive techniques into the daily activities;

 - Assist children and adults with breakfast and lunch program.  Sit and eat with children while assisting them in socializing and independent mealtime skills;

 - Help provide a variety of group and individual opportunities to interact with parents on a regular basis;

 - Help enlist volunteers and substitutes for the center;

 - Work with volunteers in the center at all levels of their program participation in such a way that they feel needed and accepted;

 - Share problems which may occur with children or parents with Teacher;

 - Advise Teacher of the need for classroom equipment and supplies; insure that indoor and outdoor equipment is safe and functional each day and that adequate supplies are on hand;

 - Complete and sign all necessary paperwork and turn it in to the appropriate supervisor by the designated time;

 - Assume job duties and responsibilities of the Teacher in his/her absence;

 - Perform other job related duties as necessary and required;

 - Handle confidential information with discretion;

 - Maintain the professional competence, knowledge and skills necessary for the satisfactory performance of all assigned responsibilities;

 - Comply with Personnel Policies and Procedures and all other agency regulations;

 - Record and maintain an up-to-date record of training;

 - Participate in meetings, seminars, conferences as necessary and required;

 - Develop and complete a yearly Professional Growth Record;

 - Abide by the program’s ethical code of conduct.

 QUALIFICATIONS

 - Knowledge of early childhood development and best practices normally acquired through a Bachelor’s or higher degree in early childhood education, child development, or elementary education, or state awarded associates degree in child development.

 - Possess or successfully complete certification in young child/adult First Aid/CPR, Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting training and DHS Criminal Background check approval as required by the Iowa Department of Human Services;

 - Comply with OSHA regulations and Universal Precautions;

 - Obtain training in the topical areas of:  child development, guidance and discipline, developmentally appropriate practices, nutrition, health and safety, communication skills professionalism business practices, and cross-cultural competence.  Ten (10) hours the first year; six (6) hours, thereafter;

 - Responsible for pre-employment physical within the last 6 months, and every three years thereafter;

 - Well developed oral and written communication skills;

 - Ability to lift, pickup or move 40-70 lbs.;

 - Adequate liability insurance, valid driver’s license and dependable transportation;

 - The absence of a conviction record or felonious acts with children;

 - Hiring subject to Policy Council approval;

 - Position contingent on availability of grant funds
