Admissions and Academic Advisor - Collaboratvie Engineering Program

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science is recruiting an Admissions and Academic Advisor to serve students who are considering or are enrolled in the Collaborative Engineering Program, a partnership between UW-Platteville and the UW-Colleges/Madison College. The Admissions and Academic Advisor helps non-traditional, place-bound students with the admissions process, evaluates transfer credits, and provides supplemental academic advising for students pursuing UW-Platteville bachelor of science degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering. This is a full-time, 12-month academic staff position with a proposed start date of November 1, 2017. This position reports to the Director of the Collaborative Engineering Program.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in science, technology, engineering, education, business, communications, or a related field
  • Ability to work effectively with students from all backgrounds
  • Attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to learn new computer programs
  • Effective time management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience with at-a-distance communication with key stakeholders
  • Ability and desire to work in a collaborative team environment, while still maintaining responsibility for independent projects and goals
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and meet the conditions to drive a state vehicle

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in science, technology, engineering, counseling, education, student affairs, communications, or a related field
  • Three years’ experience in a higher education environment in an admissions, advising, or student services role
  • Demonstrated experience working with special populations, such as place-bound, non-traditional students, transfer students, women students in STEM, underrepresented minority students, and first generation college students
  • Familiarity with student information system software such as PeopleSoft

Responsibilities:

I. Work with the UW-Platteville Admissions Office and academic departments to serve prospective Collaborative Engineering students

  • Engage in proactive recruitment of UW Colleges and Madison College students who have declared an engineering major or emphasis
  • Work with and travel to the UW Colleges and Madison College to communicate the admission and enrollment process
  • Serve as the point of contact for pre-admission advising questions and perform unofficial transfer credit reviews
  • Review applications, records, and transcripts and evaluate credits and course equivalencies to provide official credit reviews 
  • Communicate with students in a timely manner and document communications

II. Provide supplemental academic advising for new and currently enrolled Collaborative Engineering students

  • Assist in orienting new students to UW-Platteville systems and processes
  • Facilitate face-to-face orientation sessions and online orientation
  • Provide academic advising for Collaborative Engineering students in person and via telephone and email
  • Help students understand curriculum, course selection, and degree requirements
  • Utilize advising tools such as academic coaching, academic progress checks, and academic action plans to aid in student success
  • Act as a liaison/advocate for students and provide referrals to student services and support offices as necessary
  • Generate reports to determine number of students enrolled in the program and students who intend to graduate each semester

III. Additional Duties

  • This position involves work expectations outside of normal UW-Platteville office hours, including occasional evening work
  • This position involves occasional statewide travel to support recruitment and retention of Collaborative Engineering students

 College Information:

The College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (EMS) enrolls approximately 3,500 students in ABET-accredited BS degree programs in Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Mechanical and Software Engineering, and Engineering Physics, and BS degrees in Mathematics, Broad-field Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems. The College of EMS also participates in a statewide Collaborative Engineering Program that allows place-bound undergraduate students to complete their BS degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with minimal travel. In addition, the College has an online Master of Engineering program, which has been designated as a “Best Buy” in online education.
