Assitant Professor- Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems

The Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems (SRES) program at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville invites applications for an assistant professor position in Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems.  This is a nine-month, full-time, tenure-track position starting on August 22, 2018.

Qualifications:

The primary need of the SRES program is for an individual with expertise in the theory and practice of wind and solar systems.  However, outstanding candidates in other areas of SRES such as green buildings, sustainability, life cycle assessment, and project management will also be considered.  Details of the required and preferred qualifications for the position are as follows:

 Required

  • BS  in engineering or science degree in one of the programs offered by the College of EMS at UW-Platteville
  • A PhD in an engineering or science field relevant to renewable energy, sustainability, or a closely related area
  • Qualified by education and/or experience to teach upper-division courses in the SRES program
  • Knowledge and/or experience in wind and solar systems, sustainability, green buildings,  life cycle assessment, or project management in renewable energy
  • At least 9 months of relevant teaching or12 months professional experience, teaching as a teaching assistant counts toward requirement
  • Commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentoring undergraduate researchers
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

 Preferred

  • Expertise in the theory and practice of wind and solar systems
  • Experience with wind and solar site assessment
  • Ability to teach or develop a wide variety of courses in SRES
  • Work experience in renewable energy or other sustainability related areas
  • Knowledge/experience in active learning pedagogies and alternative delivery methods in teaching

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility will be to teach undergraduate courses in the SRES program. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, advising students; participating in university, professional, and/or community service; conducting research and seeking extramural funding; participating in developing new curricula related to sustainability; participating in outreach including visits to industry and recruiting local students; and assisting in coordinating campus-wide sustainability initiatives. The ideal candidate will provide students opportunities to engage in undergraduate research in topics related to sustainability.

 Program Information

The Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems program was initiated in 2013. The program is interdisciplinary with a unique curriculum that combines social science, business, science, and engineering topics. The program offers a BS major with tracks in development/management and design/analysis. Currently there are approximately 50 students in the major and the program graduated 16 students in 2016. Graduates from the program have been employed by utility and energy companies, building design and construction firms, and municipalities. A popular minor in renewable energy adds approximately 40 additional students each year.

The program is housed under the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The curriculum is taught by two full-time, tenure-track SRES faculty as well as faculty and staff from a variety of other programs including business, social science, chemistry, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. Members of the SRES program have been active in recent campus-wide efforts to instill sustainability topics across a variety of campus programs. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to join these efforts and help shape the campus’s growing array of sustainability initiatives.
