Alliant Energy is currently seeking a talented and experienced Distribution Maintenance Planning Engineer to work in the Reliability & Electric Standards department.  This position may be located in Madison, Wisconsin or Cedar Rapids, Iowa with some travel required within our service territory (approximately 25%).  There may be flexibility for this position to work in other offices within our service territory which will be evaluated on a case by case basis.  The Distribution Maintenance Planning Engineer is responsible for ensuring health of the substation equipment and providing asset management vital information to help maintain equipment.

Position Requires:
  • A four year degree form an accredited college or university, within an engineering program that is accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission
  • Seven years of related experience
  • A valid Driver’s License

*Job Responsibilities
  • Performs work on a variety of complex assignments requiring in-depth analysis to determine appropriate solutions; uses a variety of complex tools and resources to solve problems.
  • In addition to the requirements for Engineer III, uses tools and standards to design for safety in operating and maintaining equipment.
  • Maintains an awareness of customer needs and expectations and proposes solutions. Is proactively involved in the identification and solution of problems falling within assigned area of responsibility with minimal guidance.
  • Goes beyond generally accepted guidelines to analyze problems and recommend possible solutions. Solves complex problems by identifying new ways of using existing procedures, techniques and resources. Applies independent judgment in complex situations regularly relying on experience.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of discipline and uses best practices and knowledge to continuously improve on products and services. 
  • Consistently demonstrates critical thinking skills necessary to develop recommendations which provide technically sound and the most cost effective solutions, understanding the application to other problems.
  • Demonstrates the ability and confidence to present alternatives and constructively influence the customer's decision making. Has developed credibility with internal customers and peers. 
  • Makes higher risk decisions that involve direct application of technical knowledge and may have an impact on multiple areas of the business with proper sign off from customer.
  • Leads and/or makes positive, supportive contributions on teams that deal with complex technical or operational problems.
  • Proactively provides guidance to less experienced staff members; may mentor new employees or interns. Has established effective working relationships with employees, contractors, customers, functional groups, and internal and external peers. Explains technical problems to internal stakeholders and accurately prepares detailed documents such as technical studies, project documentation for future reference, etc.
  • In addition to Engineer III requirements, understands various corporate financial statements and can differentiate how project implementation will impact the rate payer versus the shareholder. Consistently applies the chart of accounts appropriately to ERP and MAXIMO. Consistently applies “best practices” with ERP processes to assure system efficiency. Structures projects such that the shareholder benefit is maximized.
  • All other duties as assigned.
*Job Qualifications
  • This position requires a four year degree form an accredited college or university, within an engineering program that is accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission, and seven years of related experience.
  • Project management leadership experience preferred, along with ability to deal with subcontractors and cross-functional teams; may have expertise in a particular area of the discipline.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer software programs (e.g., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management).
  • Ability to work in a diverse work environment.
