Dubuque County is seeking an Assistant County Attorney to prosecute misdemeanors or felonies depending on experience . Performs difficult professional legal work in the rendering of legal services to the County; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the County Attorney. Supervision is exercised over subordinate clerical staff and legal interns. Investigates and prosecutes misdemeanor cases, conducts legal research, appears in court, prepares legal charges, responds to citizen complaints. Typical Tasks: Investigates and assists law enforcement in investigating crimes; Prosecutes offenses constituting misdemeanors or felonies; Appears in court, inputs and argues at initial appearances, arraignments, bond reviews, pretrial conferences, pleas and sentencings of criminal defendants; May be assigned special duties such as Drug Task Force; Questions witnesses in criminal trials, suppression hearings, protection revocations and other proceedings; Dictates, prepares and investigates criminal charges; Conducts legal research; prepares legal opinions; writes legal briefs as assigned; Meets with agencies and departments to advise on legality of programs; Approves the legal form of deeds, decrees, leases, contracts and other legal documents; prepares reports and correspondence on legal matters; Attends public meetings; responds to citizen complaints; Serves rotation with other attorneys to cover evening and weekend court appearances and to counsel law enforcement; performs related task as required. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a law school of recognized standing and some experience in the practice of law related to local government issues.
