Director of Financial Aid

Clarke University seeks an energetic, experienced, and compassionate Director of Financial Aid. The successful candidate must have a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) and should have at least five years of progressive experience in college financial aid. Previous experience managing an institutional grant/scholarship budget is essential. Extensive knowledge of Ellucian and Technolutions/Slate especially developing assessment reports and packaging rules, would be preferred. Working in a data-driven environment, the Director also should have the ability to write and modify queries from the institution’s database, and to use the resulting data to inform decisions to support Clarke’s enrollment and net tuition revenue. 

The Director of Financial Aid is a strategic member of the Enrollment Management leadership team, responsible for the accurate distribution of all federal, state and institutional student aid programs as well as accurate and timely reporting of all expenditures. An established understanding of applicable laws and regulations is required, as is the ability to interpret and implement the rules thoughtfully. Must be able to communicate effectively with students and their families from a broad range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and be an advocate for first-generation and financially disadvantaged students and applicants.

The Director of Financial Aid will oversee personnel and day-to-day operations in financial aid including segmented financial aid packaging, eligibility determination, NAIA athletic talent awards, counseling to prospective and current students and families, operational reporting and processing, research and planning, survey completion, administration of the student employment program, loan processing, staff development, budget management, utilization of technology and execution of other financial aid operational initiatives. The Director will collaborate closely with other entities on campus (especially Admissions and Athletics) and coordinate financial aid functions with the Business Office and Student Accounts. The Director will represent Clarke and make presentations about financial aid to external audiences and at internal programs. He/she will also be expected to stay abreast of current student trends, changing financial aid regulations and individual program parameters and inform and interpret changes to other areas of the institution. The Director will serve on numerous committees and be an active member of the campus community as well as having hands-on contact with many new students and families.

Candidates for this position should have strong leadership skills and judgment; the ability to problem solve and research regulations; the ability to prepare detailed reports and do analysis; proactive administrative skills to manage the complex operations and allocation of aid; demonstrated ability to continually affect change; excellent communication skills and the ability to make complex information understandable; stellar customer service; the desire to work collaboratively and the ability to build and motivate financial aid team of professionals and students through a direct and hands-on approach. 

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in a related field and five or more years of successful financial aid experience is required. Current knowledge of federal and state financial aid regulations is required. Supervisory experience and a Master’s degree are preferred. Occasional weekend and evening work should be expected.
