The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is owned and operated by the Dubuque County Historical Society, which also operates the Mathias Ham Historic Site. The River Museum and Mathias Ham Historic Site together see over 200,000 visitors and manage outreach programs that serve over 50,000 more. Part aquarium, part museum, part science center, it is the mission of the institution to inspire stewardship by creating educational experiences where history and rivers come alive. The organization employees more than 90 full- and part-time employees.
The Mathias Ham Historic Site is seeking candidates for the position of Tour Guide/Educator. This position helps plan, coordinate, and implement a variety of educational offerings such as pioneer days, special events, and general interpretation for museum visitors. An ideal candidate is someone with exceptional people skills, a desire to learn, and the ability to positively portray the organization. This part-time opportunity offers a flexible schedule.
We are seeking energetic, motivated, and positive people to join the curious and fun environment that is created with a trip to the Mathias Ham Historic Site. Share your passion for Dubuque history with diverse visitors; introduce guests to Mathias Ham and his family, Iowa’s oldest log cabin, Humke Schoolhouse and show them the process of mining in our replica lead mine.
- Highly qualified candidates will be able to manage their schedule and work well in a team environment.
- Flexibility, initiative, and the ability to problem solve are a must.
- Prior experience working with children and/or in informal education is preferred but not required.
- Competitive pay beginning at $9.00 per hour. Primary hours for tours are Wednesdays through Sunday between 10:30am and 5:00pm. A free membership to the Museum & Aquarium, which includes the Mathias Ham Historic Site, is included for all employees, as well as discounts at our museum stores and cafes.
