United Clinical Laboratories (UCL) is a medical laboratory providing routine, emergency and reference laboratory services to Dubuque's major health care providers and people residing within a 50-mile radius.
UCL is recognized both locally and nationally for it's comittment to quality and it's innovative use of resources and technology.
UCL is a for-profit business venture owned by Mercy Hospital, Finley Hospital, and Pathology Associates. The three owners created UCL in 1986 in anticipation of the current trends now seen in the health care industry. Pathology Associates has seven board-certified pathologists located at Mercy and Finley Hospitals. They provide clinical laboratory consultation to patients and physicians in the Tri-State area 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
UCL operates at five (5) sites (Mercy Medical Center - Dubuque, Mercy Medical Center - Dyersville, Unity Point Health - Finley Hospital, Medical Associates - Maquoketa, and Cathedral Square) fulfilling its mission of providing timely, accurate, laboratory results using cost effective production methods.
UCL has 160 well-trained, highly skilled, staff members, working both full and part time. Seeking a certified MLS/MT or MLT.
We’re looking to train a qualified new team member prior to an anticipated retirement next spring. Training is scheduled for the United Clinical Laboratories site located within UnityPoint Health (Finley Hospital) in Dubuque, IA. Train on days before transitioning to an evening shift with holiday and weekend rotation. We will consider the right candidate’s desire to work part-time or full-time hours.
Monitor biological specimens to ensure specimen integrity prior to medical lab testing. Perform clinical testing, quality control, and maintenance in assigned departments, independently following established guidelines and predetermined criteria. Identify, troubleshoot and resolve problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or results. Observe safety and infection control policies. Consult with co-workers, supervisors, managers, or Pathologist when appropriate. May operate, calibrate and maintain laboratory instrumentation.
Required Certification and Education:
Certified as an Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a categorical/specialist in an appropriate discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent. We will consider applicants who have completed the educational requirements for registration, but not yet completed the exam. Must be certified within 6 months after hire.
Associate degree in a science-related field with a certificate of completion from a Medical Laboratory Technician program from an accredited institution. Military education and experience will be considered, provided that the applicant has completed the full laboratory training course of 52 weeks and has at least one year’s experience in a military hospital.

Compensation is based upon skills and experience. Full-time benefits are available at 50 hours per bi-weekly pay period: FSA or HSA-qualified health plan, voluntary dental and vision insurance, life insurance, 401k, wellness incentives, and paid time off.
