Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department Chair

Position Summary:

The College of Engineering, Math and Science (EMS) at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville is seeking a visionary leader to serve as the Chair of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MEIE) Department. We are pursuing exceptional candidates with proven leadership experience, demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, and a strong track record of industry, federal, or state-funded research. The successful candidate will provide leadership, promote visibility, and be an advocate for the department to enhance existing academic programs and develop new programs to meet the evolving needs of industry.

The MEIE department is student-focused and generates the second largest number of BS ME graduates in the state of Wisconsin. Both ME and IE programs are known for their hands-on, experiential approach to engineering education and for their highly sought-after graduates. Construction of a new engineering building (~100,000 square feet) has been approved and the Mechanical Engineering Program and new MEIE chair will have an important role in leading the development of new laboratory facilities, with anticipated occupancy of the building in Fall 2022.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a vision for the future of the department
  • Lead development of new programs, initiatives and curricular enhancements to meet the needs of current and future students and employers
  • Support the department’s commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, including ABET accreditation efforts
  • Lead development efforts and grow external relationships with corporate partners, employers, and alumni
  • Mentor and support the professional development of departmental faculty and staff
  • Work in collaboration with the dean and department chairs to achieve College or University priorities

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or related field
  • Associate professor rank or higher at prior institution
  • Proven leadership ability and experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Significant personnel and budget management experience
  • Proven commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching
  • Record of industry, federal or state-funded research

The College of Engineering, Mathematics & Science

The College of EMS enrolls approximately 3,400 students in BS degree programs that are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET in Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Mechanical, Software Engineering and Engineering Physics; and BS degrees in Mathematics, Broad Field Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems.  In addition, UW-Platteville offers an online Master of Science in Engineering program, which has been designated as a “Best Buy” in online education. The Master of Science offers technical emphasis in Engineering Design, Applications in Engineering Management, Control (Electrical) Systems, or Structural/Geotechnical Engineering.

Mechanical Engineering is the largest of UW-Platteville’s ABET-accredited programs, and the largest major on campus with 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 10 instructional academic staff, serving approximately 1,200 majors, and graduating approximately 190 students per year. The main program is housed on the UW-Platteville campus with an additional site at the UW-Oshkosh branch campus, UW-Fox Valley. The Industrial Engineering Program has 4 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 1 instructional academic staff, serves approximately 170 majors, and graduates approximately 45 students per year.

The Department has long-standing relations with industrial partners throughout Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and beyond; such as John Deere, Kohler, Kimberly Clark, Greenheck, 3M, Subzero-Wolf, Boston-Scientific, Rockwell Automation, Plexus, Alliant Energy and others.
