 Position Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is hiring 2 full-time, 12-month academic staff members to work as Advisors with the Center for Distance Learning.  The advisors serve as primary points of contact for distance students, providing academic guidance, career counseling, and general outreach activities including various retention efforts.  The advisors also serve as a liaison between the student and various offices on campus, such as financial aid and veterans’ benefits.  The positions are physically located on the UW-Platteville campus in Platteville, Wisconsin.  The positions are annual appointments beginning July 1, 2019.  The work schedule is 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The annual salary is $36,790.


  • Build and maintain relationships with students to help ensure their success meeting their unique educational goals.
  • Serve as a liaison between the CDL staff and the academic departments/programs to support each department’s degree offerings.
  • Serve in an academic advisor and outreach capacity.
    • Develop and follow an initial advising plan.
    • Initiate and respond to correspondence from admitted students.
    • Provide guidance on course selection.
    • Interpret and explain student academic and administrative policies and procedures.
    • Work with appropriate staff such as program coordinators, admission specialists, etc., on transfer courses, career advice, course substitutions, and other curriculum matters when applicable.
    • Engage, coach, and motivate students to obtain educational goals by reaching out in non-registration and registration time periods.
    • Develop, implement, and track follow up communications with admitted students.
    • Identify at risk students and provide assistance to them.
    • Provide responses to student questions associated with individual course and program progress.
    • Work with students who want to drop classes and/or withdraw from their program.
    • Initiate follow up communications on all payment issues such as financial aid, military benefits, vouchers, etc.
    • Work with various offices/staff to obtain information about changes to policies and procedures that will impact students.
    • Support student comprehension of the registration process and encouragement of course selection.
    • Develop and follow a retention plan at various touch points during the non-registration time frame in addition to open registration times.
  • Other duties
    • Work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
    • Identify and participate in various professional development opportunities to support individual and department knowledge and skills.
    • Serve on departmental committees and project teams.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:


  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • 1-3 years of professional work experience in academic advising, student outreach activities, higher education, or customer service.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Collaborative and independent worker, with the ability to work well with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with various deadlines.
  • Detail and goal oriented.


  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • 3-5 years of professional work experience in academic advising, student outreach activities, higher education, or customer service.
  • Ability to establish rapport and identify learner needs in an online environment.
  • Familiarity with student information and relation management systems, PeopleSoft (PASS).
  • Familiarity with document imaging software such as Perceptive Content.
  • Previous experience in distance learning.
