Assistant Professor - Agronomy/Crop Science & Statewide Extension Specialist

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Agronomy/Crop Science & Statewide Extension Specialist. This is a full-time, 12-month basis appointment, splitting time 50/50 with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Extension. The start date for this position is August 24, 2020.

Responsibilities

Engagement in teaching and advising UW-Platteville undergraduate students and support of UW-Madison Division of Extension missions. Teaching responsibilities include courses in Nutrient Management, Weed Science, Precision Agriculture Technologies, and other agronomy/soil science-related courses with a load of approximately 6 credit hours per semester.

The successful candidate is expected to affiliate with Extension’s Crops and Soils Program and develop of an impactful Extension program that provides leadership and translational research focused on nutrient management, soil health, cover crops, and cropping systems. It is expected that this person will develop a research program that is integrated with her/his Extension efforts to support the efficient, profitable, and environmentally sustainable production of crops.

Additional responsibilities include providing expertise to the teaching, research and outreach mission of Pioneer Farm, participation in professional and scholarly activities, mentoring student organizations including the collegiate crops team and agronomy club, and support of external educational efforts, such as the World Forage Management Cup and Agronomy Career Development events.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Agronomy, Agroecology, Crop Science, Weed Science or closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • 5 years of experience in teaching and/or extension-related services.
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Candidates should have a broad background in agronomy and demonstrated expertise in nutrient management of field and forage crops of the North-central U.S., soil health, and/or related agronomic principles. 
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and research.
  • Enthusiasm for professional engagement with students in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations and experiential learning activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate research results into Extension education programs on issues identified as needs of the state and its residents.
  • Ability to document the impacts of research and Extension efforts and communicate these impacts to stakeholders, the general public, and professional colleagues

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Agronomy or related discipline from an accredited institution
  • State and/or national certification as a Professional Agronomist or Crop Advisor
  • Experience coaching a collegiate crops or weed science team
