Job Overview

This Clerk I position, primarily providing patrons circulation services, is based at the Asbury Branch, and will be assigned to substitute at other branches of the Library District as needed. Regular evening and weekend shifts are required.  This position averages 42 hours on a bi-weekly basis.

Examples of Duties

  • Provides general library services at circulation desks, using library automated system, including circulation (check in and check out) and OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog), advises patrons in locating books.
  • Answers incoming calls, routes to appropriate staff or department;
  • Processes new library materials
  • Assists patrons with photocopier, computer and fax, collects fines and fees;
  • Delivers library materials to the branches;
  • Performs routine library tasks, including:
    • shelving books and materials
    • reading shelves

Minimum Qualifications

At minimum, any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience working in a library.  Bachelor’s degree and library experience preferred.
 

Supplemental Information

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Some knowledge of library principles, methods and practices; general knowledge of reader interests and of books and authors; some knowledge of theory and objectives of a public library system; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library employees and patrons; ability to operate computer, use Internet and basic software; ability to learn assigned clerical tasks and adhere to library policies and procedures.
 
Physical, Mental, and Environmental Requirements:

•    Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, which permits the employee to communicate effectively;
•    Sufficient vision, which permits the employee to prepare and read a wide variety of materials;
•    Sufficient manual dexterity, which permits the employee to operate a computer keyboard and other equipment;
•    Sufficient personal mobility, which permits the employee to complete various activities such as lifting up to 35 lbs., bending, kneeling, carrying, walking
