Job Overview

This Librarian I is responsible for managing the circulation services across all Dubuque County Library District branches, but does not include supervisory responsibility for circulation staff. Duties specific to this position include, but are not limited to patron and reference services, collection development, running reports, compiling statistics, training library staff, coordinating materials exchange among branches, and serving as the circulation policy and procedure expert for staff. Strong skills in analyzing and improving procedures and processes and Koha ILS/SQL will be beneficial.  Performs responsible, entry-level librarian duties for the library system; works as substitute for other library clerks; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Library Director.

Example of Essential Duties:

  • Develops and maintains the library’s website using the PLOW (State Library of Iowa web development program); adding new applications, updating, and creating new pages, etc.
  • Performs all computer updates including hardware and software for staff and public computers.
  • Responsible for processing interlibrary loan requests from customers and other libraries using SILO (State of Iowa Libraries Online bibliographic database) and OCLC (national cataloging records database) systems.
  • Plans and implements public programs and classes for all ages including story times, school and author visits, computer education classes, book discussions, etc.
  • Plans, creates, and publishes promotional materials for all library programming including flyers, advertisements, updating community calendars, displays, and informational materials;
  • Copy cataloging under the direction of the library cataloger which includes downloading records from subscription database and editing for local authority control;
  • Selects, orders, and weeds library materials for specific area(s) of the collection according to standard library practices and local policies under the direction of the library cataloger and director.
  • Answers reference questions and provides reader’s advisory service based on local lists and commercial resources;
  • Assists director with scheduling such as assigning staff to fill temporary vacancies for vacation and sick time.  Maintains Google calendar of staff assignments.
  • Runs reports for library operations; inventories and orders library supplies;
  • Assists with general library services at circulation desks using library automated system, including circulation (check in and check out); placing holds, purchase requests, and collects fines and fees;
  • Assists customers with photocopier, computer, and fax, and locating library materials;
  • Performs routine library tasks, including; receiving, shelving library materials and reading shelves;

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required.  Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university or equivalent combination of education and public library work experience preferred.  
 
Criminal history background check is required.  Must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s license.  Perform job related travel, which may require use of personal vehicle for office business and possess appropriate auto liability insurance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of library principles, methods and practices, general knowledge of reader interests and books and authors; some knowledge of the mission and goals of a public library system; knowledge of basic cataloging and classification rules and principles; ability to work independently; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library employees and patrons; ability to use Internet and basic software programs; ability to troubleshoot computer, printer, and other equipment problems; ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing; general knowledge of standard office methods and procedures, business English and spelling.

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Requirements: 
Ability to lift and carry a minimum of twenty-five pounds, sit for extended periods of time, squat, kneel, reach, bend, stoop, squat and stand.  Sufficient vision to review materials in both electronic and hard copy form.  Must have and maintain mental stamina to perform the work.  Perform all required duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Work Schedule:
Schedule will require two evenings per week, plus weekend shifts on a rotating basis.  Other hours to be arranged.
